A last minute diving header from Man of the Match Gallagher secured a well-earned victory for the greens in a well founght contest. Although the coloureds outnumbered the bibs, and on paper had all the play-makers, the Greens were at them from the off, with Gallagher back from an enforced lay-off to boost moral.
Experience and the wisdom of older heads showed through as the game moved from free-flowing passing to an edgy stand-off. It was the Greens who dared and the reaped the rewards. A fine header from Tony, a dazzling dribble from Darren, and with Piers the engine of the side, there was only ever going to be one result. Rich's lethal box work ensured the goals were flowing. A batch of lucky goals from the shirts kept scored level, until that last ditch show of bravery from the Geordie marksman. As his head met the ball with typical force and precision time seemed to falter and the admiring players could only applaud what was undoubtedly the moment, not just of this game, but of the year.
Gallagher took the effusive praise with his usual humility, saying, "It's a team game and when I do something like that I'm only ever thinking of my teammates, who have to fetch and carry in order that I can shine!"
It was rumoured that Tord Grip was watching from the sidelides, so man City may well be getting their cheque book out again this summer.
